Bodaboda man killed in Ngomeni fatal collision

A 36-year-old Bodaboda rider died soon after he was involved in a road accident along Ngomeni-Mitamisyi road in Mwingi North.

His motorbike was involved in a head on collision with an oncoming Toyota Hiace motor vehicle.

Robert Kimanzi Mutui sustained head injury after the crash. He was rushed to a local health facility where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body was taken to Kyuso Sub County Hospital morgue for preservation as police investigations go on.

The accident occurred at around 1pm.

An authoritative police source said police visited the accident scene and established that the vehicle was being driven towards Mitamisyi carrying a casket bearing the remains of a deceased person headed to Masyungwa in Tseikuru Ward

The police source said that it was upon reaching the scene of accident the motor vehicle was hit from the right side by the Bodaboda driven by the deceased who was joining the junction from Mutairu.

BREAKING: Kalatine Primary School in Mumoni Ward on Fire

A dormitory in Kalatine Primary School has caught fire. Witnesses say the pupils are safe.

They have appealed to those within neighbouring location to join forces at extinguish the raging flames. "Those around Kalatine can come over we join forces in containing the fire" , said Mumoni MCA Titus Kasinga, the area legislator.

The cause of the fire was not immediately established by press time.

10 Chief Officer positions up for grabs in Kitui County

The Kitui County Public Service Board has advertised for ten positions for Chief Officers.

The vacancies include that for Basic Education, ECDE and Childcare Facilities. Another post is Polytechnics, Vocational and Homecraft Centres. 

Lands and Housing will be one more Chief Officer (CO) post on offer in the Governor Julius Malombe-led government. 

The fourth CO position concerns municipalities and towns. It is CO Urban Development.

Others are Agriculture and Fisheries, Livestock Development and Apiculture, Water, Irrigation, Environment and Forestry as well as Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources.

Kitui County Public Service Board Chairperson Dr Florence Makindi said that the deadline for application is October 28, 2022.

She added that “Qualified women, persons living with disabilities and those from the minority and marginalized groups are encouraged to apply".

Separately, Tharaka MCA Muthengi Ndangara told a local radio station that Tharaka community needs to be considered to serve in Dr Malombe administration. He said one of the CEC posts should be reserved for Tharaka saying that they have never produced a minister since devolution started.

“Tharaka is the only different community that speaks another language in Ukambani. We are the minority. I am here to represent my community so that we can be recognized and get job positions as well as development programmes as the rest of the residents.

I would like to appeal to the governor who is setting up his administration that he considers us since we voted for him. I appeal to Governor Dr Malombe to appoint a Tharaka as one of his ministers.”

Leaders condemn alleged rape of Mumoni market cleaner by police

The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) is investigating an incident where a police officer in Mumoni is alleged to have sexually assaulted a county government employee.

 Kitui County police commander Leah Kithei told MWINGI TIMES that she instructed Mumoni Sub County police commander Morris Gudha to open a file over the alleged rape. Officers from IPOA are expected in Mumoni police station tomorrow to look into the matter.

A Kitui County market cleaner lost her goat at Mumoni shopping centre in Mwingi North. Upon searching for it, she found it was inside Mumoni police station. Since she did not find any police officer in the station when she visited the station to look for her lost goat. She took it and went home.

The incident occurred on September 23 which is more than 14 days ago. Local leaders have demanded immediate action against the police who allegedly sexually assaulted his victim.

When the police recovered the goat in the afternoon of September 23, they asked her to report to Mumoni police station to identify the goat. The county employee was locked up at Mumoni police station cells where it is alleged that she was sexually assaulted by a police officer.

Mumoni Sub County police commander Morris Gudha avoided responding to our enquiries when we reached him.

Mumoni MCA Titus Kasinga and ex-councillor of the area Kimanzi Wandusya called on police to speed up the investigations into the alleged assault.

Former civic leader Wandusya told MWINGI TIMES that when the County Government of Kitui market cleaner lost her goat, that is when the problems bedevilling her started.

Wandusya said that since the market cleaner found the police station unmanned, she took her goat from the compound. This, he said, was without permission from the police.

The former councillor said that on the evening of September 23, police arrested her and accused her of “stealing police exhibit”. That is when some police officer pounced on her allegedly raping her in the night, said ex-Councillor Wandusya.

Kitui County Executive Committee Member for Gender and Social Services Hellena Ken said her office was working closely with the National Gender and Equality Commission over the alleged crime.
