During this duration, I realized that the media landscape has really changed. </div><div><br></div><div>A decade ago when we were in the university, it was hard to get space in the print media. There was no opportunity elsewhere. The new forum then was blogging and designing websites, writing for film, acting and poetry.</div><div><br></div><div>Today you can run a media house from your tablet, phone and laptop. You don't need a desktop or a big rented apartment with big screens to publish. That was us then.</div><div><br></div><div>Today's media training is a bit relaxed and free. When I asked the students if they sent copies to other press especially Nairobi-based legacy media, they said some did but few got published.</div><div><br></div><div>Due to the sheer volume of copies received, we did not manage to have all sent to press. Of course, some were rejected over scripting issues and topics selected.</div><div><br></div><div>But a commendable observation is that my former university comrades were humble enough to accept corrections and try again to write feature stories for an experience in publishing. None of the students we corrected did not redo work as advised. </div><div><br></div><div>While we have staff studying at the university, I was reminded of my former lecturers. I asked about some of them and where they are now. Great team.</div><div><br></div><div>Of course, during our time we'd not afford much travel and exposure to latest media machines, but that did not make us any less of graduates. And we still keeping going strong.</div><div><br></div><div>It's good to help these young scholars get through media training with little frustrations which life throws around. </div><div><br></div><div>Thank you Second Year Journalism and Mass Communication class, Chuka University. </div>Practicing mindfulness and meditation can be powerful tools for embracing solitude in a connected world.</b><br></div><div><br></div><div><b>The Essence of Solitude</b></div><div><br></div><div>Thus, solitude is far much more than just being alone, but the consciousness of comfort, clarity, and even rejuvenation. It is inside and out in touch with oneself. Today, in over-connected society, solitude has become a rare and precious commodity passing off as related to being lonely or isolated. Solitude, </div><div>however, is a choice—embracing being alone.</div><div><br></div><div><b>Solitude and Mental Health</b></div><div><br></div><div>An ironic twist of thought is the idea that solitude is one of the cornerstones for bad mental health. The solitude provides "recharging" for our mental batteries that are under regular assault, providing </div><div>constant chronic stress, producing adrenaline and cortisol. It allows for thinking and self-reflection, which can help give people added insight into their thinking, feelings, and values. It is the dress rehearsal for real-life activities as it provides for more preparedness and practice through focused thought and </div><div>consideration. The reasons solitude can provide these things are varied, but some of them do stand out. </div><div><br></div><div>End of the day solitude can lead to independence and appreciating oneself and self-regulation. Psychology research has also aimed at the therapeutic role of solitude. Recent studies have generally </div><div>shown that solitude enhances creativity, ability to solve problems, and emotional control. Solitude also avails one's thoughts with the freedom to drift and traverse different ideas, lay down complex problems, and unleash their creative potential.</div><div><br></div><div>Solitude gives mental space within which there would be brainstorming, incubation of ideas, and the ability to find new solutions for the given problems.</div><div><br></div><div><b>Embracing Solitude in a Connected World </b></div><div><br></div><div>It is in such solitary moments, which have become more and more scarce in today's digital life, at a time when the drawer with which to put a crossword book is </div><div>characterized by never-ending notifications that stand in a queue and pour down a continuous </div><div>information stream onto the person, leaving almost no time for quiet reflections. This time is premised with the aspect that, the other polarity of this finding a niche for loneliness is essential to help in keeping peace of mind and the creative process.</div><div><br></div><div>Practicing mindfulness and meditation can be powerful tools for embracing solitude in a connected world. Spending just a few moments a day in calm, peaceful reflection can develop an inner infrastructure—a baseline of serenity and clarity about life—that stands us in good stead amidst all our activities.</div><div><br></div><div>Finally, other solitudes and opportunities for thought can be created through occasional breaks from technological devices, simply going into nature. Perhaps some things are more nourishing in complete stillness than a walk in the woods—just sitting.</div><div><br></div><div><b>Cultivating a Solitude Practice</b></div><div><br></div><div>Time and again finding a time or a place for some solitude in a day does not have to be that complicated. Quiet time for oneself may be composed of a number of simple activities like journaling, reading, or even doing something creative that promotes self-expression. Thereby, it can be a more easily incurred part of a routine to set controlled times aside for reflection daily or weekly.</div><div><br></div><div>Design a space for all things that are holy. This can be in a corner of your living space, or thus a retreat away somewhere in nature, but a place into which you can withdraw for the nurturing of your soul is very important. Focusing your living space by meaningful objects, like books, candles, or art that surrounds you, can give some sort of peace and inspiration for reflection.</div><div><br></div><div><b>Conclusion</b></div><div>Solitude easily sneaks its way as one of the underrated principles in a world that often gets synesthetic with busyness </div><div>and constant stimulation. And yet, it proves to be a very critical tonic to our mental wellness, a great stimulus to creativity, and a most reliable compass towards drawing our most authentic self. And that accepting those little moments of solitude allows us to be able to foster an internal depth and intimacy with themselves that can inspire our creativity and be of a little bit of peace in such chaos. We should not shrink from such solitude but kneel down in it and take that into our arms with all the strength, inspiration, and renewal that it brings to our hearts.</div><div><br></div><div><i>FEATURE ARTICLE By WYCLIFFE MAUTIA, Second Year Student pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies at Chuka University</i></div>Mwingi Timeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15160206680617381671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1488119997218433522.post-1933877435522504242024-03-20T18:56:00.000+03:002024-03-20T18:56:25.412+03:00MUENI: Who will lift this heavy burden from Kenyan men?<div><b>What are the roles and responsibilities of a man? Whatever way, he is supposed to be "responsible" as a man.</div><div>Just when he thinks of settling and get a wife the issue of dowry and a perfect wedding is demanded by the wife-to- be and her parents. Some families go to the extent of demanding for almost a fortune in order to give away their daughter which in the end leaves the man frustrated and helpless.</div><div><br></div><div>Many men decide to leave school in order to educate their siblings, save the little they have to feed their children and yet no one wants to know if they have needs, what they wear or whether they had lunch.</div><div>Cases of men committing suicide due to lack of employment are increasing compared to those of women. This is due to the pressure on them to have money to cater for different needs and the society doesn't allow them to lack. And if they lack it is a crime that seems impossible to forgive.</div><div><br></div><div>Let's give the man a chance to be free and more relaxed. His life is not just about giving money, they require to be loved, taken care of, and their problems addressed like any other person's. Let's save our men from mental and emotional trauma just because they have no means of giving.</div><div><br></div><div><i>STORY By LILIAN MUENI, Second Year Journalism and Mass Communication Student at Chuka University</i></div>Mwingi Timeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15160206680617381671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1488119997218433522.post-19639110721558859712024-03-20T18:08:00.000+03:002024-03-20T18:08:08.522+03:00Navigating the stock market<div><b>Navigating the stock market can seem like a daunting task, especially for those who are new to the world of investing. </div>Safaricom was recognized among the top brands loved by women in Kenya. M-Pesa was number one and Safaricom PLc was second. It is one of the top movers in Nairobi Stock Exchange.</b><br></div><div><br></div><div>In navigating the stock market, first do your research. It is essential to have a basic understanding of how the stock market works, including the concepts of supply and demand, market trends, and how various economic and political factors can affect stock prices. You can start by reading books, watching tutorials, and following financial news to keep your informed about the current state of the market.</div><div><br></div><div>Secondly, determine your investment goals and risk tolerance. This will help you create a plan that suits your individual needs. If you are looking to generate long-term returns, you may want to invest in stable, well-established companies with a proven track record. On the other hand, if you are comfortable with taking on higher levels of risk, you may opt to invest in emerging companies that have the potential for high growth in the future. It is vital to remember that risk and reward go hand in hand in the stock market, with potentially higher returns also carrying a higher level of risk.</div><div><br></div><div>Once you have a clear understanding of your goals and risk tolerance, you can start to research and select individual stocks to add to your portfolio. There are various factors to consider when choosing a stock, such as revenue, earnings, management, and industry trends. It is essential to analyze the company's financial health and growth potential before investing. You can also seek professional advice from financial advisors or do your own research by reading company reports and financial statements.</div><div><br></div><div>Diversification is a key element in navigating the stock market. It is crucial not to put all of your eggs in one basket by investing in only a few stocks. Diversifying your portfolio across different sectors and industries can help reduce the risk of potential losses. If one industry or company performs poorly, your other investments can help balance it out. It is also important to regularly review and adjust your portfolio to ensure it aligns with your investment goals and risk tolerance.</div><div><br></div><div>Another important thing to keep in mind when navigating the stock market is to control your emotions. The stock market tends to fluctuate, and it can be tempting to sell stocks when the market is down or buy more when it is up. However, reacting to short-term market movements can lead to hasty and often irrational decisions. It is crucial to have a long-term perspective and trust in your investment strategy.</div><div><br></div><div>Lastly, it is essential to have patience and discipline when navigating the stock market. Investing is a long-term game, and it takes time for your investments to grow and generate profits. It is also important not to let your emotions take over and make impulsive decisions. Stick to your investment plan and make informed decisions based on research and analysis.</div><div><br></div><div>Navigating the stock market requires knowledge, research, diversification, and discipline. With these factors in mind, anyone can become a successful investor. Remember to stay informed, have a long-term perspective, and always evaluate your risk tolerance. With patience and a sound investment strategy, the stock market can be a valuable tool for achieving your financial goals.</div><div><br></div><div><i>STORY By DAN MASIEMO, Journalism and Mass Communication Student at Chuka University</i></div>Mwingi Timeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15160206680617381671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1488119997218433522.post-35355164011166968032024-03-20T14:15:00.000+03:002024-03-20T14:15:11.802+03:00Inside the shocking rise of murder cases in university campuses: Understanding the trend<div><b>In recent years, university campuses have been rocked by a disturbing trend: the rise of murder cases among students and faculty members. What was one considered a safe haven for learning has become a battleground for violence, leaving communities and authorities grappling with the complexities of these tragic incidents.</b></div><div><b><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>Coding is a journey that needs patience, curiosity and not being afraid to make mistakes.|FILE</b><br></div><div><br></div><div>Amidst the setbacks that defined my recent years, a dialogue emerged within me, a conversation with the shadows of adversity. Seeking guidance, I turned to this amazing, intelligent lady, driven by her passion for empowering youth, my mentor, Susan Khasoa. As we continue to celebrate International Women’s Day and the collective power of world pulse, I’m thrived to celebrate her.</div><div><br></div><div>Sometimes we sadly forget to appreciate and wonder are we becoming less human or what? I think that feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it. I may not be where I wanted to be but I’m thankful to her because I’m not where I used to be.</div><div><br></div><div>Life begins with one step outside the comfort zone, that faith of taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase. Pride is piece of us that holds us back until we realize that we need help sometimes. On January 19th, that day still lingers in my mind. I reached out for guidance and she was so friendly, pleasant and easy to talk to. We met by chance and turned into friends and now our destiny keeps us close to each other. Sharing my aspiration and fears, “adversity is a stern teacher but it molds character and resilience. Embrace the challenges for they have the power to shape a future beyond your current imagining,” she advised. Her words a beacon of hope in the midst of my uncertainties.</div><div><br></div><div>She introduced me into coding, a path that would redefine my identity. I embarked to a journey of reshaping my future. It’s a journey of resilience and self-discovery. It’s a testament to my ability to overcome the shadows of the past and forge a path of my own. She believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. She believed I could do it when I believed that coding is a daunting task, reserved only for the tech wizards among us. She believed in me when I had that fear of not being smart enough, that fear of overwhelming number of coding languages, the fast-paced change in tech, and most hesitant to start learning due to the fear of giving up on the way. She encouraged me that coding can be challenging but its more accessible than it looks, with the right mindset. Her words weaving encouragement into the fabric of my evolving journey.</div><div><br></div><div>She encourages me that learning coding is a journey, so should be patient with myself. Stay curious, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes.</div><div><br></div><div>As I faced the crossroads of my academic pursuits and personal struggles, the dialogue with my mentor became a compass guidance, guiding me towards newfound determination. The journey is never ending, there’s always going to be growth, improvement, adversity—Transformation is a process, and as life happens there are tons of ups and downs. It’s a journey of discovery, there are moments on mountaintops and moments in deep valleys of despair. I’m focusing on the journey not the destination. Joy is not found in the finishing an activity but in doing it.</div><div><br></div><div>Step outside that comfort zone, learn that code, be inspired like I did. A feeling of giving up may loom but step forward anyway. I accept failure. Everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept on not trying, failure is part of the process. You just learn to pick yourself up. It’s a kind of memory that tells us that what we’re now striving for, was once nearer and truer and attached to us with infinite tenderness. Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up. I like to strive not because there were any guarantees of success but because the act of striving is itself the only way to keep with life, but we must not live on hope, let's step beyond expectation and remain resilient.</div><div><br></div><div>Coding requires empathy, practice and willingness to invest time and effort. It has made my life more fulfilling. Learning something each day about how to juggle the game is fun. I am most grateful to Susan for unconditional love and support and immense growth.</div><div><br></div><div>Graduating from university, becoming that tech wizard seems like a far-unfetched dream, but one day I will be living that dream. I will ensure everyone feels valued and heard, recognizing everyone matters especially those who need support the most. I’m going to keep making music that carries the secret that pure human connection is liberty. I’m going to turn off the sounds that drag people down to the pit of despondency.</div><div><br></div><div>I am genuinely appreciative to Susan for her thoughtfulness in making this connection happen. It is an excellent opportunity for me and I'm excited about its potential. I look forward to more guidance and support. Your support means a lot to me and I am committed to maximizing this opportunity. I’m lucky to call you a friend. It feels like words aren’t enough to express my gratitude for all your guidance. I never thought I’d have so much fun learning coding.</div><div><br></div><div><i>By FAITH MULI, Second Year Student pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies at Chuka University</i></div>Mwingi Timeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15160206680617381671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1488119997218433522.post-40089490470732031962024-03-20T13:05:00.000+03:002024-03-20T13:06:06.212+03:00The role of religion in promoting economic growth<div><b>Religion has been a fundamental component of human civilization, profoundly influencing nations, societies, and individuals. beyond its philosophical and spiritual components, religion affects many facets of human existence, such as behavior patterns, economic growth, crime rates, personality development, and value systems.
