Moderate to heavy rainfall expected in Kitui County-Meteo

Most parts of Kitui County are expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall in the next one week, the Kenya Meteorological Department forecast shows.

The maximum temperature during the period is expected to oscillate between 24°C and 33°C while the minimum temperature will range from 17°C to 23°C.

This month of April is the peak month of the March-April-May, MAM rain season.   The. cessation period for the season is expected to be from May 1 to May 21, 2024.

Weatherman releases Kitui County rain distribution forecast

The weather forecast for March-April-May, MAM 2024 seasons shows a Near Normal (NN) to slightly Above Normal (AN) distribution of rain.

Kitui County is classified into three zones namely, Lower, Middle and Upper ecological zones. The Lower zone is expected to have an earlier cessation of rains compared to Middle and Upper ecological zones. This will be between the first and second week of May, 2024 (May 1st-14th). On the other hand, the Middle and Upper ecological zones will be expected to have rainfall cessation occuring between the second and third week of May (8th-21st May, 2024).

In terms of rain distribution, the Lower zone is expected to have fair to bad rain season while Middle and Upper zones will have fair to good rain season. This is according to a Weather forecast report sent to MWINGI TIMES by the County Director of Meteorological Services Mr Daniel Mbithi.

Stay away from flood waters, -Met Dept

A heavy rainfall advisory has been issued by the Weatherman. In a report sent to newsrooms, the Kenya Meteorological Department says that the  heavy rainfall being experienced over several parts of Southeastern Lowlands and other parts of the country "is expected to continue from 19th April, 2024".
Heavy rainfall of more than 40mm is likely to continue being experienced in Southwestern Lowlands with increased intensity from 20th to 21st April, 2024, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department.|FILE

The heavy rainfall is forecast to be more than 40mm . It is likely to intensify from 20th to 21st April, 2024.

The Meteorological Department forecast adds that the heavy rainfall "is likely to be accompanied by gusty winds, large ocean waves and strong southerly winds in the Southeastern sector." 

Southeastern Lowlands is where the three counties of Ukambani lie.  They are Makueni, Machakos and Kitui.

Kenyans have been warned against crossing flooded areas to avoid being swept away by raging waters.

There will be reduced amount of rainfall in Kitui this week -Met Dept

With April being the peak month for the long rains season, the weatherman says that the amount of rainfall will reduce in the initial days of the forecast and pick again towards the weekend.

"Few areas are also likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall of more than 30mm during the forecast period", says Kenya Meteorological Department.

The maximum temperature forecast for this week will range from 25°C to 34°C while the minimum temperature over the same time will oscillate between 17°C and 23°C.

The weatherman adds that cessation period will be any time between the first week and third week of May 2024.

Another wet week for Kitui County

The forecast week ending mid April is expected to be a wet one. All areas in Kitui County are expected to receive rain. Most of Kitui is forecast to receive moderate rain. "The County is expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall of more than 30mm in 24 to 48 hours and is likely to continue over most places during the forecast period ", reads the weather forecast in part.

Higher areas are set to receive heavy rainfall, Kenya Meteorological Department advisory shows.

Kitui County Director of Meteorological Services Mr Daniel Mbithi has said that April is the peak month for the March-April-May [MAM] season. 

The season is expected to stop any time between May 1 and May 21.
