TRAGIC DEATHS OF KENYAN ATHLETES

Kenya has been known to produce some of the greatest athletes but sometimes, their lives are cut short.
Accidents are a major cause of deaths for Kenyan sporting legends.

The latest devastating case of an athlete dying mysteriously has been that of the world’s fastest marathoner, Kelvin Kiptum, who lost his life in a road accident. Kiptum was with his coach, Gervais Hakizimana.

This is the list of some great Kenyan athletes who have dreadfully lost their lives.
1. Samwel Wanjiru
On the early morning of July 20, 2010, Kenyan athlete Samuel Wanjiru, Jason Mbote, and Arthur Mwangi skidded and crashed as their car plummeted downhill along the busy Nairobi-Nakuru highway, landing in a ditch. Coming home from a party held by Wanjiru at his rural home, the trio lost their lives in the ill-fated road accident.

Wanjiru was a world star, having in 2008, created an Olympic marathon record in Beijing to become the first Kenyan to win a gold medal in the event. At 21, Wanjiru was a young, talented athlete and a role model, especially among the youth. The death of the nation's hero and that of his friend Mbote sent the country in disbelief and mourning. Wanjiru was the most openly celebrated Kenyan athlete in his home country largely due to his immense talent and easy approach to big races.

Instead of shying away from the pressure concomitant to being a top athlete and national hero, the Beijing Olympian embraced and openly talked about his next target; to win the London 2012 Olympics marathon race. His death just two years to the UK Olympics not only caused resentment but brought to the fore the dangerous state of roads in Kenya, government's failure to put in place strong road safety intervention measures, and leadership lapses in sports sector.

Kenya, with its record of outstanding long distance runners, had not experienced a tragedy of such magnitude in a country known for safety in long distance runners' training and daily road running experiences. The death of Wanjiru was attributed to negligence but the exact driver leading him to the balcony where the athlete jumped to escape mob beating from the residents of his home was never determined.

2) Agnes Tirop (1995-2021)
The demise of Agnes Tirop was once that shocked the whole world since the youngster was just beginning her glamorous career. Tirop was one of the greatest female long-distance runners from Kenya, who was known worldwide for her talent. She won bronze medals in the 10,000m race at the 2017 and 2019 World Athletics Championships. At the 2015 World Cross Country Championships, Tirop became the second-youngest-ever gold medallist in the women's race, after Zola Budd. At the time of her death in 2021, she was the world record holder in the 10-kilometre women-only event.

Tirop was found dead in her home in Iten, Elgeyo-Marakwet County, on 13 October 2021; she had multiple stab wounds in the neck and abdomen. Authorities believe a domestic altercation occurred and Tirop was stabbed, as they also found her car windows had been shattered.

3) Kelvin Kiptum (1999-2024)
The world of athletics was left in utter shock after the world’s fastest marathoner, Kelvin Kiptum, was confirmed dead one Sunday night. Kiptum, the reigning London Marathoner, was in the company of his coach and an woman when he was involved in an accident that left himself and his coach dead. The woman sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital.

The Chicago Marathon champion came to the marathon realm with a bang and he was just getting started. He made his full marathon debut at the 2022 Valencia Marathon where he posted the fastest time in a debut. He then proceeded to the 2023 London Marathon, clocking the now-third-fastest time before completely obliterating Eliud Kipchoge’s world record time at the Chicago Marathon.

4) Nicholas Bett (1992-2018)
Nicholas Bett was one of the most promising athletes Kenya had but his life was sadly cut short after an accident. He was a World Champion in the 400m Hurdles race, having won in 2015, and a two-time bronze medallist at the African Championships in Athletics.

Bett died in a road accident near the town of Lessos, in Nandi County, in August 2018. He had arrived back from the 2018 African Championships in Athletics in Nigeria two days earlier, and was driving along the Kapsabet to Eldoret road on his way back to Nairobi.

Bett lost control of his car, a Toyota Prado SUV, which then hit a bump on the road and landed in a ditch, killing the athlete instantly.

5) David Lelei (1971-2010)
David Lelei was a Kenyan middle-distance runner who specialized in the 800m and 1500m and became an athletics official and a political candidate but died in a vehicle accident in 2010.He was involved in a road accident along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway, about 200km from Nairobi. Lelei won silver at 1500m at the 1999 All-African Games, and later that summer finished seventh over the same distance at the World Championships. He was fourth at the 2001 World Indoor Championships in the  800m.

In the car with Lelei was Moses Tanui, 1996 and 1998 Boston Marathon winner and 1991 World 10,000m champion over the 10,000m, who sustained minor injuries.

These are some of the few athletes who have tragically lost their lives as there are more. The question that remains is, does government do anything to protect these legends who we lost when they are at their time of prime?

Milestones of AFCON tournament spanning 67 years

The Africa Cup of Nations commonly referred to as TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations for sponsorship reasons or simply AFCON, is the main international men’s association football competition in Africa. It is sanctioned by the Confederation of African Football [CAF], and was first held in 1957. Since 1968, it has been held every two years, switching to odd numbered years in 2013.
Ivory Coast is the current holder of AFCON championship
In the first tournament in 1957, there were only three participating nations; Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia. Since then, the tournament has expanded greatly, making it necessary to hold a qualifying tournament. The number of participants in the final tournament reached 16 in 1998 and until 2017, the format had been unchanged, with the 16 teams being drawn into four groups of 4 teams each, with the top two teams of each group advancing to a ‘knock out’ stage.

On 20th July 2017, the AFCON was moved from January to June and expanded from 16 to 24 teams. Egypt is the most successful nation in the cup’s history, winning the tournament 7 times, with Cameroon winning five times and Ghana four times.

Three trophies have been awarded during the tournament’s history; the current trophy was first awarded in 2002. Egypt won an unprecedented three consecutive titles in 2006, 2008, and 2010. In 2013, the tournament format was switched to being held in odd numbered years so as not to interfere with the FIFA World Cup.

Ivory Coast are the current tournament’s champions, having beaten Nigeria 2 – 1 In the 2023 finals, with Sebastien Haller having played hero 18 months removed from his testicular cancer diagnosis, completing a comeback to score the 81st minute winner for Ivory Coast.

Since inception, AFCON has grappled with numerous challenges. One of the foremost issues has been the struggles to meet infrastructure demands, including stadiums, accommodations, and transportations, in host countries. Political instability has often disrupted the tournament’s organization and security, leading to last minute changes or cancellations.

Financial constraints have also hindered smooth operations, necessitating substantial sponsorship and government support. Security threats, such as terrorism and civil unrest, have posed a significant challenges necessitating robust security measures to safeguard players, officials and fans. Scheduling conflicts with European club seasons have impacted player availability and the competitiveness of participating teams.

Limited media coverage compared to other continental tournaments has affected AFCON’s global exposure and sponsorship potential. The COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated issues, disrupting schedules and revenue streams.

Additionally, concerns about the quality of playing surfaces have arisen, potentially affecting match quality and player safety.

Despite these obstacles, ongoing effort to address infrastructure, investments, security, and other issues underscore the tournament resilience and significance in African football.

To address the challenges facing AFCON, several solutions can be implemented. Firstly, investing in infrastructure development in host countries will ensure adequate facilities for the tournament, including stadiums, hotels, and transportation networks. This can be achieved through partnerships between government, private investors, and international organizations.

Secondly, promoting political stability and security in host nations will mitigate the risk of disruptions to the tournament and ensure safety of participants and spectators. Enhanced security measures and cooperation between countries can help address security concerns effectively.

In conclusion, while AFCON has faced numerous challenges since its inception, concerted efforts to address infrastructure, security, financial, and scheduling issues can ensure the tournament’s continued success and growth.

To gamblers: the casino never loses unlike you

Most Kenyans are involved in betting hence becoming addicts where they have made betting their master becoming their own slaves. This has brought a great damage to their lives and that of the society.
Overall, gambling is a dangerous habit for you since it leads to addiction, crime and breaking existing relationships.|FILE

Gambling has led to poor general health, relationship problems, joblessness, crimes, and even suicidal thoughts.

Gambling without winning can lead to headache, stomach problems, stress and blood pressure weakening one's good health. This is caused by the expectation where they will get more money to place their bet and  loss that they suffer. Not only does it affect the gambler but also the family members as they have to take care of their sick one.

Gambling has led to relationship problems among family members and spouses. If one of the spouse has addiction to gambling, it brings a misunderstanding as too much money is wasted instead of investing it, hence ruining their relationship and family. This also brings secrets between the spouse as one is afraid of offending the other party thus loss of trust.

Gambling has led to crime and imprisonment. When one becomes addicted to betting they engage themselves to crimes like theft and murder. Theft from family members, friends, society happen in order to get money to place their bet with. Murder occurs in cases where one loses the bet and becomes furious towards the winning party leading to conflict hence murder. These crimes lead to imprisonment as one needs to serve their crimes in accordance with the country's law.

Joblessness is a thing that has happened to gamblers as they spend most of their time in betting hence less effort is put in their work. They also spend their income on bets becoming bankrupt, where their lives end up in the streets as beggars due to lack of money to support their needs. Thus, it is important to avoid gambling at all cost.

Loses that occur during betting make one to think of committing suicide in order to overcome their trouble. Losing their belongings to gambling they think that they have lost all and that they have nothing left other than end their life so as to stop causing suffering to the family members.

In conclusion, it is important for one to avoid too much gambling and spending on it and think of doing positive things that will bring a great impact to their lives and the society.

What hosting Afcon matches will mean for Kenya in 2027

The African Cup of Nations stands as the major competition across the African continent. This prestigious  tournament is organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The aim of the tournament is to unite Africans ,showcase super talents in African soil and also support African culture.
Cote D'Ivoire team celebrating their win in Africa Cup of Nations

Afcon has its history,it's significance, evolution of the tournament among others. The tournament started in the year 1957 where it was held in Sudan. It started with three teams which where featured competing in a round-robin format. These teams where Sudan, Ethiopia and Egypt.Since 1957,it started evolving in size after every four years  teams having competition to prepare for the qualifications to take part in the next tournament.

Afcon has played a vital role not only to the participants but to the entire continent. It gives a platform to our African footballers to showcase their talents to the world attracting scouts of European clubs who come to search for new talents.

Success to our players can be a springboard to lucrative careers in Europe top leagues like the English Premier
League, La Liga , Serie A, Bundesliga among others .The tournament fosters a sense of national pride and unity bringing together different communities to support their teams. It also promotes economic activities to the business people in the host country.

In the year 1996,it was one of the most iconic moments in Afcon history.Kenya was to play host role but it was hosted by South Africa who hosted it for the first time after Kenya had failed to host the tournament because we failed to meet CAF requirements. As we all know Afcon it has its own challenges starting with organized infrastructure being one of the  major challenges hindering the tournament.

It is after over 28 years after losing the chance to South Africa  Kenyans can finally smile again being the hosts of the 2027 Afcon together with their neighbors Uganda and Tanzania in the Pamoja bid which they won last year campaign of who could play the role of hosting the big tournament. The big question is will we be able to meet CAF requirements before the deadline?

Its in 2017 after twenty eight years ago, Kenyans finally knew the reason why the country failed to host the 1996 African Cup of Nations.According to Confederation of African football President issa Hayaton, Kenya would not host the biennial continental showpiece because it lacked the infrastructure which is required .Subsequently Kenya was banned for the next two Afcon tournaments and that's how the South Africa was awarded the chance and it helped them to win their first continental title as they emerged from apartheid.During that time the late President of South Africa Nelson Mandela inspired the tournament.

Later it was reported that due to economic constraints ,Kenya had no money to renovate and was reluctant to construct the new stadia which were needed in Nairobi and Mombasa so as to host the tournament.

Now it's different. All the stadiums which are required to be renovated are all in Nairobi County that is Nyayo National Stadium, Moi Sports Complex Kasarani,Kipchonge Keino Stadium and in addition, also the government launched a new stadium known as Talanta Sports Complex with capacity of 60,000 which should be completed by December 2025 as per the plans of Kenya Kwanza government. This stadium is said to be the home for the finals of the tournament.

Confederation of African Football (CAF) Also has demanded that the stadiums in the three countries should meet their standards for them to be able to host the showpiece. The question we should be asking ourselves is how is the current government dealing with the same issue we faced twenty eight years ago of renovating the stadiums we have and will they be complete before the deadline during this tough economic challenges we are facing as a country? But we can have hopes in our government we have been seeing Ministry of Youth Affairs, Sports and the Arts Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba investing massively in sports.

With the help of Kenya Kwanza government,  they have been supporting talents through financial support to our national teams ,and players to go and represent our country and through this we are eyeing to see how the renovation process takes place. Hosting the tournament will also enable us to boost our economy because we will be expecting large numbers of fans of the participating countries .Also it's an added advantage to our national team Harambee Stars because they will have the courage to play home games with the full support of our fans.
