Mother who allegedly poisoned her two sons to face murder charges

 POLICE in Kitui are investigating a possible murder incident where two boys were allegedly poisoned by their mother.

A single mother aged 25 years is suspected to have given her two sons queen cakes and yoghurt laced with poison. 

Kitui Central Sub County Directorate of Criminal Investigations, DCI boss Nzioka Singi said the murder suspect was being held at Kitui Police Station as detectives investigate the matter.

The mother was alleged to have given her two sons food laced with poisonous substance where one succumbed and the other survived the ordeal.

Fredrick Musyoka Mercy who is Mercy’s elder son survived the incident after he was hospitalized for four days.

Musyoka’s younger brother Oscar Mumo was not so lucky. He died almost immediately after taking the meal.

“Investigations have revealed that the suspect, Mercy Nzambi, who worked as a housemaid in a family at Misuuni village in the outskirts of Kitui town sneaked back to her home in Waliku village in Museve area of Kitui Central and fed her children on harmful food”, Singi said.

Singi added that both children were in school and were living with their grandmother but she was away when the incident happened.

The DCI official revealed that on the material day, Mercy Nzambi was taken to her mother’s home on a bodaboda. On arrival, she served the poisonous food to the children, he added.

It took the intervention of Kitui Central MP Makali Mulu to pay for an autopsy of the body of the deceased.  The post-mortem was done on Thursday December 16.

The court gave investigators 10 days to conclude investigations. The Prosecution intends to charge the woman with murder.

“Ultimately, we intend to charge the woman with the offense of murder because it was clear she had intentions to kill her two children by giving them food laced with poison”, said Mr Singi.
