County government of Kitui has launched the construction
of additional 375 modern Early Childhood Development Education learning centers
at a cost of Sh. 350 million.
Once the new ECDE centres are up and running early next year
they will bring the total of classrooms constructed by
the County government to 906. Already, 531 ECDE classrooms have been completed
and are being used by learners.
The Kitui County Education Executive Member Peninna Kilonzi on Tuesday presided over the award of local
service orders (LSOs) to 340 local contractors to undertake the construction of
the ECDE centres. The centres are spread across all the 40 wards in Kitui County,
she added.
COWBOY CONTRACTORS WARNED
Kilonzo said the training of local contractors and awarding them
tenders to do the ECDE centres was a deliberate move to create employment and
wealth among the locals. She said the ECDE contractors must give jobs to
residents near the sites of the upcoming ECDE centres.
“It is expected that each of the contractors will hire
at least 10 locals to work at the sites. They will also source local materials
like sand, water and stones from the locals thus ensuring a higher
circulation on money among the locals,” she said.
The County Chief Officer for Administration and Coordination Joseph Musyoka however cautioned the contractors that they
risked being black listed if they did shoddy jobs.
''We expect you to complete the contracts in the stipulated time
frame. The works must meet the stipulated BQs and acceptable standards. Those
of you who do a shoddy will be blacklisted'', said Musyoka.
He said the work of the contractors will be constantly monitored
to ensure that it meets the required standards. He added that final contract
payment will only be released after experts ascertain the works are up to the
standard.
