Delayed onset and early cessation expected for Long Rains in Kitui County

Kitui County is likely to experience below normal rainfall for the March-April-May long rains season. This is according to Kitui County Director of Meteorology Daniel Mbithi.

"The season is expected to have a delayed onset (21st March -4th April 2023) and early cessation (1 May-10th May 2023)" said Mr Mbithi. He also added that the distribution of rainfall is expected to be poor in both time and space.

However, a few areas are expected to have heavy rains that may lead to flash floods.

Kenya Meteorological Department advises farmers to use certified seeds from reputable agro dealers in order to boost their probability of high farm yields.

The Weatherman also urges farmers to do timely weeding and plant more grass for livestock feeds. Some of the recommended varieties are Mbeetwa, Ikoka, Mbwea and Nthaata Kivumbu.

The Kitui County Meteorological Department has reiterated proper vaccination of cattle, poultry and dogs to manage diseases.
They should also spray cattle and goats to manage external parasites.
