Buoyed by DCI clearance, Kalonzo to sue Ruto over Yatta land grab claims

Wiper Democratic Movement party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has vowed to push for heavy damages over remarks made by Deputy President William Ruto claiming he had grabbed 200 acres of National Youth Service land in Yatta, Machakos County.

While on a campaign trail in January in Bomet, Ruto said that Kalonzo had nothing to show in his 40 years’ service in government except “grabbing” the Yatta land.

“Your only record is that you are living on government land, which you have turned to be yours”, said the country’s second in command.

Kalonzo, himself a senior counsel, has enlisted the services of Siaya senator James Orengo, Makueni senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr, Makueni MP Dan Maanzo and Embakasi MP Julius Mawathe.

Speaking on Wednesday after he was cleared by the DCI over the land grabbing allegations, Kalonzo said that the claims injured his reputation.

“We do not intend to leave this matter here because my rights were violated by the announcements. My legal team is still exploring other ways because heavy damages are clearly to be considered, including other legal remedies that we may want to pursue”, said Kalonzo at his Karen offices which host his presidential election command centre.

According to DCI boss George Kinoti, DP Ruto’s claims that Kalonzo grabbed the land from NYS lacked proof. In a letter dated August 12, Kinoti says “The complainant was comprehensively investigated and the final findings were that Pasteve Holdings Limited privately owns the subject property after it acquired it from a company known as Betraco Limited. That NYS alleged to be the legitimate owners of the subject property categorically stated that they have no bona fide proprietary ownership interest of the same at all”, said Mr Kinoti.

The courts found DP Ruto to have grabbed Alexander Muteshi land measuring 100 acres. This was during the 2007/8 post-election violence.
