Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua has ordered a temporary
closure of businesses in the county on Saturday when the national census kicks
off.
Dr Mutua in a statement he issued on Monday said the enterprises
will remain closed between August 24 and 25 to enable accurate data collection
during the national census.
According to the county boss, the move is aimed at enabling
the families to be together hence easing the national count exercise.
“Bars and joints that predominantly sell alcohol, or engage
in entertainment will be closed from 6.00am, August 24 until 6.00pm, Sunday,
August 25 2019,” the statement read in part.
All markets to be closed by 5.00pm on Saturday, August 24
and reopen at 9.00 am Sunday, August 25th, 2019.” The governor added.
Dr Mutua said the stoppages and closure will give workers
enough times to their homes and participate in the census activity.
He asked employers
in the county to give their workers off duty warning that those would defy the
directive might be heftily penalized. “Those
who disregard these set times will incur heavy and punitive measures that may
include cancellation of their business permit, arrests and hefty fines,” Dr. Mutua
said.
The county chief also called on the people from the neighboring
counties of Kitui and Makueni to travel home and participate in the national
exercise.
“I urge my people of Machakos and the South Eastern Kenya
Bloc (SEKEB) region to ensure that they are at home for the census activity.
