Makueni governor Prof. Kivutha Kibwana has dismissed
media reports published on Sunday by a local daily claiming that he had joined
Deputy President William Ruto’s 2022 camp.
The story published by the Sunday Nation yesterday (August
18, 2019) claimed the second term governor had held talks with the political
allies of Dr .Ruto over a possible political alliance and endorsement of the Jubilee party deputy leader in
Ukambani region.
But through a press statement issued by his Director
of Press Edward Mwendwa, Prof Kibwana terms the article published as a
scandalous piece of fiction.
“It is sad that a reputable newspaper such The
Nation could allow itself to be (mis)used to peddle lies, sleaze and fiction in
the name of political writing which is bereft of facts or sense,” the statement
read in part.
Prof. Kibwana denied neither endorsing the DP nor
holding closed-door meetings with his Kitui and Machakos colleague governors Charity
Ngilu and Dr. Alfred Mutua to discuss politics.
“Neither has governor Kibwana endorsed William Ruto’s
candidature. If anything, he (Prof. Kibwana) has publicly announced his own bid
and will offer himself for presidential elections in 2022. This is doing on his
own volition,” Mr Mwendwa said.
While warning the public that the report was “a
total crass”, Mr Mwendwa demanded for Nation to apologize to the governor and
pull down the online version of the story.
This comes days after Prof. Kibwana and Dr. Ruto on
Thursday last week attended a cultural festival event at Turkana where the
former warned that the latter’s presidential ambitions should not be taken for
granted.
“Any Kenyan or a leader who thinks you can be taken
for a granted; who thinks that you don’t matter – I think they are wrong. And I
am saying this boldly because I am a constitutional lawyer, political analyst
and politician,” said Prof. Kibwana.
Prof. Kibwana who has won the hearts of Kenyans for
his development track record in his county also announced that he would be in
the race for State House in 2022.
