Lobby: Kitui donkeys carry KSh.27 million daily
yet ignored by masters

Women at Mwingi held demonstrations to demand for proper treatment of
donkeys in Kitui County and sensitize the society over the great
economic importance of donkeys in hardship areas which are frequently
hit by drought and water shortages like Kitui.

The women have also scheduled cleaning all major towns and markets in
Kitui in order to ensure that donkeys and humans do business in cleans
environs which pose minimum danger to them.
Speaking on their behalf at Kamuwongo market, Ann Anyika who is a
member of Okoa Punda women group said that donkeys are of crucial
importance to women in Kitui as they have enabled them to engage in
businesses, helping them in transporting commodities from one market
to another. This has empowered many families in Kitui, enabling them
to acquire funds to educate their children as well as cater for their
daily bread.
DONKEY’S THE NEW CASH COW
According to Ambrose Musyimi, a community development officer working
with Caritas under the Catholic Diocese of Kitui, a recent survey
showed that there are over 135, 000 donkeys in Kitui and if each
donkey is estimated to generate at least KSh. 2000 daily, this would
translate to over KSh. 27 million the money generated by donkeys in
Kitui in a single day.
Musyimi said that the economic impact of donkeys in Kitui is something
hard to ignore and beseeched all stakeholders to device new mechanisms
of taking care of donkeys as they are of great importance to the
society.
He urged policy makers from across the county to put into utmost
consideration welfare of donkeys in any policy making decision.
