Visa Oshwal community distribute relief food to Kitui Special schools and farmers along banditry prone areas

65 Special schools across Kitui county and farmers along banditry prone areas on Sunday benefited with relief food worth Ksh.5-6 million from Visa Oshwal Community Center based in Nairobi. 

In an event that was branded Shree Visa Oshwal Community Nirobi Famine Relief held at Mwingi Boys Secondary school play ground spearheaded by Nairobi Oshwal Community Vice Chairperson, Jinit Shah. 

According to the Vice Chair,the community seeks to distribute relief food to arid and semi arid areas across the country, Kitui being one of them in a bid to help needy people in the society. 

“Two years ago, we issued relief food to Mwingi residents and we have come back again after discovering that residents are not food secure after rains failed,” Jinit articulated. 

“Before coming to Mwingi, we also distributed relief to Turkana county residents,” added the Vice Chair. 

The Oshwal community requested Ambassador Ngovi Kitau, the first Kenyan Ambassador to the Republic of Korea [2009-2014] to step in and help identify regions that are highly affected by drout. 

“After sitting with relevant authorities within the county, we settled on issuing relief food to Special schools in Kitui and farmers whose farms have been invaded by Somali herders after noticing that most parts of the county was highly affected by drought,” stated Ngovi 

“More than 2770 students with disabilities and farmers in Ngomeni and Ukasi areas of Mwingi will benefit from the 500 Tonnes relief food,” Ngivi added. 

In addition,the former Ambassador challenged Kitui residents to utilize the resources available to develop the county where cases of drought will be curbed if the obtainable resources are well utilized. 

“Kitui has over one million residents and 30,000sqkm therefore they should use the available resources as capital to develop the county,” advised Ngovi. 

Mulua Muthangya, Deputy Headteacher at Mwingi Special School for the deaf said they were very happy to have received 292 cartons of food for 160 pupils in the school. 

“Each catton has milk,rice,beans,flour among other food stuffs which will last pupils for at least three months,” happy Mulua narrated. 

The deputy head teacher further said that most pupils are orphans while others have been raised by single parents which make them very vulnerable. 

“The donations will keep our children in school for they will be food secure and this will also translate into concentration and good performance in school,” the Deputy Head of school said
