Kitui County Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development Dr Stephen Kimwele has issued a stern warning to individuals taking part in illegal trade of donkey meat.

The County Executive Committee Member [CECM] toured Kanyonyoo police station where he called for enhanced surveillance to eradicate the menace. The CECM's statement came days after police in Kanyonyoo area intercepted a pick up truck carrying fresh donkey carcasses from Mwingi to unknown destination.
During the impounding, three male suspects were arrested and the carcasses taken for destruction. They will be arraigned in court to answer charges after police complete investigations.

Mr Ambrose Musyimi, a Caritas -Kitui official said they are ready to work closely with Dr Julius Malombe-led administration to protect donkeys in the county.
Musyimi said that through the Mtunze Punda Daima program, Caritas -Kitui seeks to sensitize residents on proper care for the animals which are a major supporter of their livelihoods. He urged residents to report any instances of donkey slaughter to the county government and security agencies.
