Youth targeted as government launches free wifi in Kitui

The County Government of Kitui under the Ministry of ICT, Gender, Culture and Sports in collaboration with ATC Kenya company has planned to boost network coverage from 84 per cent to 94 per cent in the Governor Dr Julius Malombe-led county.

This came after the Ministry of ICT from National Government installed free Wi-Fi in different parts of Kitui County for easy access of digital marketing and initiate digital era among the youths as a way of getting job opportunities to earn income and better their lives.

Therefore, due to this initiative the County Government of Kitui and ATC Kenya company has laid down a plan to build a digital community booster at Kanyongonyo in Kanyangi Ward, Kitui Rural Sub County to help network coverage in some parts of that constituency.

Officiating the launch of free Wi-Fi at Kitui bus park, the CECM for  Culture, Gender, Youth, ICT and Social Services Ms Phoebe Ndunyu Mutemi said that there was improvement of network capacity in Kitui County for the last 10 years where it raised from 36% and now is currently at 84% hoping  to continue boosting it by all means possible.

"To use this free Wi-Fi, we need a better network coverage and through collaboration with Safaricom we have brought BTS to ensure network coverage is better and it has boosted from 36 per cent  to 84 per cent and the county government through my ministry are doing what we can to achieve 94 per cent coverage" said CECM Phoebe Mutemi. "We have collaboration with ATC Kenya company to build a digital community at Kanyongonyo in Kanyangi Ward to make sure youths work online and business people trade through digital marketing" she added.

Among the areas were free Wi-Fi was launched on 1st September, 2023 by ICT Cabinet Secretary Mr Eliud Owalo in partnership with Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife Ms Penina Malonza are Kitui South at Mutomo Market, Kitui Town at Chief's office and at Central Primary then proceeded to Mwingi Central where they installed the free Wi-Fi at CDF office.
