Hope for cancer patients as Kitui cancer centre built

Kitui County is constructing a cancer centre at the county’s referral facility in Kitui town. The KSh 20 million project under construction is funded by the Brystol Myers Squibb Foundation and is being implemented by the Catholic Medical Mission Board (CMMB), a development partner of the County Government of Kitui.

Governor Dr. Julius Malombe while meeting the CMMB Country Director Dr. James Kisia and the County Programs Manager Jesse Kihuha said the centre will go a long way in giving palliative care to patients. He said the project will promote cancer awareness, screening, care and support to the cancer patients and the residents as a whole.

The Governor appreciated the donor for the project that he said boost health care services in the county.

On her part, Kitui County Executive Committee Member for Health and Sanitation Ms Ruth Koki said women and girls of reproductive age will be able to access pre-cancer screenings and chemotherapy as well as other cancer care and palliative care services once the centre is complete.

On his part, CMMB Country Director Dr. James Kisia said the centre, being carried out in honor of the late Phangisile Mtshali of South Africa will “create impact among patients and effect sustainable change among the population in Kitui.”.

CMMB Kitui County Programs Manager Jesse Kihuha said the project will support the effectiveness of Kitui’s health system to ensure that all patients can obtain high-quality healthcare regardless of who they are or where they live. 

“The centre will host histopathology lab equipment, chemotherapy chairs, chemotherapy mixing chambers among others”, he said.

Also present in the meeting was the County Chief for Public Health and Sanitation Ms Lynn Kitwan, CO for Drugs and Medical Supplies Aggrey Kamba and CO for Medical Services Dr. Benson Musyoka.
