The employee had disconnected an illegal power connection in his Kitengela home, Kajiado County.

The MP will be arraigned in a Kajiado court to face assault charges.

The assault took place on Monday July 3.  According to Kajiado County Kenya Power Operations and Maintenance manager Julius Okangi, the MP held them hostage for three hours in the evening. That is, from 5pm to 8pm.

As the power utility staff confiscated the illegal connection posts and cables,  that is when the assault ensued. The MP was spotted in the video that has since gone viral slapping a Kenya Power staffer and dragging him as his colleagues watched, dumbfounded.

Okangi said Kitengela area had notorious illegal connections as field staff reported to him. Earlier ,once some were disconnected, they reconnected themselves again after Kenya Power staffers went back to office.

Illegal power connections pose danger to users and their neighbors. They interfere with current flow to other customers homes who are likely to report low electricity current. Yet they pay lighting bills without fail.

Before joining Parliament in 2017, MP Nimrod Mbai worked as an Administration Police officer from 1996 to 2017. He was elected as a Jubilee lawmaker. He successfully defended his seat last year on a United Democratic Alliance [UDA] party ticket.
