Bad news for farmers as rains likely to cease, Weatherman says

Most places in Kitui County are expected to experience a general reduction of rains, Kenya Meteorological Department has said.

In a dispatch sent to MWINGI TIMES, Kitui County Director of Meteorological Services Mr Daniel Mbithi said that most places are likely to record "zero or light" rains.

The county weather boss reiterated that May was expected to be the cessation month of the March-April-May [MAM] long rains.

The maximum temperature during the forecast period is expected to range from 25°C to 33°C while the minimum temperature will oscillate between 16°C and 23°C.

On Monday, MWINGI TIMES visited a number of farmers who were optimistic to harvest well this season but today's forecast is likely to be disappointing to them.  This is because they and most of the country have experienced five failed rain seasons. This depleted their savings and they were hoping to recoup the losses after toiling under scorching sun for three months.

Many farmers have their crops having no reached maturity stage. No harvests were made by press time.

The crops were at flowering stage or lower stages of development, a clear indication that they needed more rains in order to harvest.

The month of May is likely to usher in another cycle of drought that had ceased owing to the onset of March-April-May rains on March 22.
