Mango is native to India and Southeast Asia, and people have cultivated it for over 4,000 years.

Hundreds of types of mango exist, each with its own characteristic taste, shape, size, and color. It’s a drupe, or stone fruit, which means that it has a large seed in the middle.

Mangifera indica, commonly known as mango, is a species of flowering plant in the family Anacardiaceae. It is a large fruit tree, capable of growing to a height of 30 metres or 100 feet. 

Mango leaves contain several beneficial plant compounds, including polyphenols and terpenoids. Terpenoids are important for optimal vision and immune health. They’re also antioxidants which protect your cells from harmful molecules called free radicals.

Meanwhile, polyphenols have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Some research suggests that they improve gut bacteria and help treat or prevent conditions like obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. 

Polyphenol found in many plants but in especially high amounts in mango and mango leaves, is credited with numerous benefits.

Mango leaves may have anti-inflammatory effects, which may even protect brain health. Mango leaf extract may help regulate fat metabolism, thus protecting against fat gain and obesity.

Mango leaf extract may help manage diabetes due to its effects on blood sugar and triglycerides. Emerging research suggests that certain mango leaf compounds may combat cancer. Research indicates that mango leaf may treat stomach ulcers and other digestive conditions. 

The antioxidants and polyphenols in mango leaves may delay some of the effects of skin aging and treat certain skin conditions. 

Mango leaves are packed with antioxidants, they may safeguard your hair follicles from harm.

 While mango leaves can be eaten fresh, one of the most common ways to consume them is in tea. To prepare your own mango leaf tea at home, boil 10–15 minutes fresh mango leaves in 2/3 cups (150 ml) of water.

If fresh leaves aren’t available, you can purchase mango leaf tea bags and loose leaf tea.

What’s more, mango leaf is available as a powder, extract and supplement. The powder can be diluted in water and drunk, used in skin ointments, or sprinkled in bathwater.

The above certitudes among many that have accelerated the passion and zeal for tree mango tree seedlings germination and planting at Kelma Farm Orchard cum varied tree nursery. We have been collecting mango seeds and empty milk packets as far as in Mwingi town which is 65kms from KELMA FARM. Street children and youth in Mwingi town have been helpful for us in collection of mango seeds as well as empty milk packets in exchange for money for their upkeep. A 90kgs sack full of mango seeds we buy at 1,000 Kenya shillings which is equivalent to 10 US Dollars. We mutually co-exit.

They have confessed that KELMA FARM has been of great help to them since they don't engage themselves in juvenile delinquency acts any more such as petty theft to earn a living. 

Our long term blue print goal about the street children is to re-unite them with their beloved family members or relatives, take them to schools and tertiary institutions such as polytechnics for viable knowledge, skills acquisition and empowerment to be responsible and beneficial citizens to themselves and the larger society. And also offer some of them jobs at Kelma Merchandise and General Suppliers as well as Farm.
