Ukambani governors on the spotlight over spending public funds

All Ukambani governors have been flagged by the Controller Of Budget [COB] for flouting spending regulations of taxpayers' money.

The law requires that 30% of county government's budget be meant for development spending.

In Machakos County, the COB noted that for every
shilling it received to fund development projects, it used 22 shillings for recurrent activities. The county is headed by Ms Wavinya Ndeti who is serving her first term in office.

The COB stipulates that for every shilling spent on development, counties should spend at most Sh2.33. Kitui County overshot its budget by Sh19 while Makueni did the same for Sh17.

Kitui County is headed by Governor Dr Julius Malombe serving his second term in office while Makueni is led by first term governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr.

This puts all Ukambani counties as having breached the law on financial prudence since there was likelihood of having promoted consumption at the expense of building roads, hospitals and schools to wananchi as drought persists.

Other counties which failed to adhere to public finance spending regulations were Kisii, Meru, Lamu, Migori, Nakuru, Murang'a and Bungoma.
