Ruto reveals his elusive bid to get Kalonzo join gov’t

Speaking in Kitui town on Sunday during his Thanksgiving service, President William Ruto disclosed an unsuccessful bid he made to Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka before August general elections to join the “winning team”.

The country’s foremost leader said that he had planned to work with Musyoka to form the government if he wins the Presidency.

Ruto said that after the polls, he also reached out to the former vice president who categorically said no to his advances in joining government.

He said the Opposition plays an important role in oversighting the government of the day. “I myself have made an effort to look for Stephen. We sat down and had a talk. I told him that we have government and it is important we walk together. He told me that he wanted to try Opposition. Let him try the Opposition we see how far he will go then we can talk again later”, he commented.

Dr Ruto appeared to take jibes at Kalonzo saying that his party slogan is kazi ni kazi so even Opposition has work for Kalonzo.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka was the only Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition principal who attended the Mashujaa day celebrations at Uhuru Park, Nairobi on October 20.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also expressed his frustrations in looking for Kalonzo to join the government. He said they don’t understand him.

“Governor Wavinya Ndeti, we have no problem with Honourable Kalonzo Musyoka. We are waiting for him. It is you who will decide what you want with him because we don’t understand him.”, said Gachagua.

He blamed Raila Odinga for Kalonzo’s political woes. Gachagua said that Azimio Deputy Presidential interviews were made to humiliate Kalonzo.

Gachagua further opined that Kalonzo had more political capital that former Azimio presidential running mate Martha Karua. This, he said, was because Kalonzo delivered in rallying the Ukambani residents to vote for Raila unlike Ms Karua.

The Deputy President said it was out of his love for Ukambani residents that President Dr William Ruto gave two cabinet positions to the region despite him receiving very few votes from Ukambani. He said that the leaders of Ukambani were the ones misleading the masses.

Ruto’s first cabinet has former Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua nominated as Foreign Affairs and Diaspora CS. It also has Hon Penina Malonza nominated to be the CS for Tourism.  They were vetted by the National Assembly together with other nominees for various positions pending appointment.
