An uncle of the deceased, Caxton Mutambuki who is a gospel singer said tragedy struck at around 5 pm when the girl who was playing at edge of the dam slipped, fell into the waters and drowned.

Mr Mutambuki said the girl had gone to fetch water with a friend after arriving home from school only to lose her life. He said local divers were not around to help save her life and arrived too late.

The gospel artist said the divers only helped to retrieve the body of the school girl.   He said police arrived and accompanied by relatives took the body to Mwingi Level Four Hospital.

He called on the government to move with speed and forestall further deaths by erecting a perimeter fence around the dam. He said in the recent past at least 6 people had drowned at the dam.
