TERRORISTS WHO FLED KAMITI MAXIMUM PRISON ARRESTED IN KITUI

THE three convicted terrorists who escaped Kamiti Maximum Prison were on November 18, 2021 found in Mwingi East Sub County, Kitui County. They were nabbed by the Anti-Terrorist Police Unit as they approached Ukasi, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations says.

 Mohamed Ali Abikar, Musharraf Abdallah Akhulunga alias Shukri  and Joseph Juma Odhiambo alias Yusuf tried to flee to Somalia, a neighbouring country from Nairobi, the East African economic hub.

Police are transporting the trio to Nairobi for interrogation and custody.

After the trio left one of Kenya’s most guarded prisons on November 16, President Uhuru Kenyatta held a crisis meeting at State House with top security officials.

Afterwards, President Uhuru announced the sacking of Commissioner General of Prisons Service Wycliffe Ogalo.

The officers on duty during the prison escape were directed to be redeployed and suspended with immediate effect.

The three alleged convicted jail breakers apprehended in Kitui on Thursday morning will be held briefly at Mwingi Police Station for identification. Kitui County Commissioner Thomas Sankei has said that prison authorities from Kamiti GK prison have been summoned to confirm whether three people arrested Endau Location, Kitui East Sub County in Kitui County are the terrorist convicts who broke from jail days ago. "We have been searching for suspicious strangers who we spotted by members of public and at around 10 am they were arrested by ATPU personnel. We are not sure whether they are the ones who were involved in the prison break. Let's wait until they are identified positively," said Sankei.

Sankei said that the suspects were already being transported to Mwingi Sub County police headquarters where they would be picked by security officers from Nairobi upon their being identified. “Please give me time. I am also travelling to Mwingi and I will feed you with the full information," said the commissioner.

The DCI had placed Sh20Million bounty on the head of each of the three terrorists to reward anyone who will provide information leading to their capture. The whole exercise had been allocated Sh60Million.

Musharaf Abdallah was convicted of trying to attack Parliament in 2012. As for Joseph Juma, he was arrested in 2019 along the Kenya/Somali border planning to join Al-Shabaab, a terror group,

Mohamed Abdi Abikar was convicted for helping Al-Shabaab attack Garissa University in April 2015 where 148 people died, majority being university students.
