The multibillion project was started by the former Vice President in a region that has been ravaged by drought for decades.

On her Facebook page, Kitui MP Irene Kasalu expressed optimism that the project will attract investors in cash crop and dairy farming as well as fruit processing.

"I anticipate the project will attract investors in cash crop and dairy farming and fruit processing", said the Kitui Women Representative.

So far, 5,000 acres of Wikithuki Irrigation Scheme have been planted maize, beans, watermelons and other horticultural crops.

Other leaders present during the tour were Mwingi North MP Paul Nzengu and Kitui Senator Enoch Kiio Wambua among other regional elected leaders.

By the time we went to press, neither Wiper official page on Twitter nor Kalonzo's official Twitter page had updated the multibillion story news to its followers.

Deputy President William Ruto usually updates his followers in real time from the event he is in.
