The byelection will be seeking to fill Nguu/Masumba ward seat that was vacated by Harris Ngui following a grisly road accident on June 15, 2021.

The IEBC has already received nomination papers of Mr Eshio Mwaiwa of Wiper Democractic Movement party and Daniel Musau who will be running for election on UDA ticket. The two traversed the ward on Monday campaigning for themselves under strict Covid-19 protocols.

An independent candidate who failed to get allowed to vie for the seat has voewed to challenge the IEBC decision. Mr Timothy Maneno is running against time give the electoral body slated the Makueni polls to take place on October 14 and the main rivals are already campaigning. He has to fasttrack his petition against IEBC if he can be allowed to vie.  The IEBC questioned his academic papers which were in doubt.

UDA has propelled itself by bagging a number of byelection seats which occurred. Some of the biggest losers to UDA’s fame are the ruling party, Jubilee which has suffered a string of losses by failing to retrain seats it held before they became vacant.

In July this year, UDA candidate John Njuguna Wanjiku won the Kiambaa parliamentary seat against Jubilee Party’s Njama Kariri.

Wiper Party beat UDA in Machakos senatorial byelections which were held in March this year. Agnes Kavindu of Wiper Party garnered 104,352 votes against UDA's Urbanus Ngengele who got 19,726 votes. She was declared winner by IEBC.
