Makueni Speaker declares Nguu/Masumba seat vacant

Makueni County Assembly Speaker Douglas Mbilu has declared the Nguu/Masumba ward seat vacant. The seat became vacant after its MCA Harris Ngui died in a road accident.

The Speaker ordered the Independent and Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to hold an election for the ward as is required by law.

“I command you that, due notice being first given, you do cause election to be held according to law of a member to serve in the County Assembly for the said Ward”, wrote the Speaker to IEBC in a letter dated July 6, 2021.

There was low voter turnout in Kitise/Kithuki by-elections in March this year. Governor Kivutha Kibwana who supported Muungano candidate Mr Joseph Kioko was pitted against Wiper’s Sebastian Muli. Muli later won the seat.

Sebastian Muli won by garnering 3,892 votes against his closest challenger Joseph Kioko of Muungano party with 878 votes.

Kitise/Kithuki seat fell vacant following the resignation of Mr Kelvin Mutuku in November 2020.

The next by-election will be closely watched since it will once again be seen as a popularity contest between Kalonzo's Wiper and Prof Kibwana's Muungano parties.
