REPORT: Kitui MP Nyamai among top performers in parliament

None of Ukambani male legislators made it to top five performing parliamentarians in a report released by Mzalendo Trust.

Kitui South MP Rachael Kaki Nyamai emerged fourth after Millie Odhiambo (Suba North), Sabina Chege of Murang’a and Glady Wanga (Homa Bay).

The South Eastern region produced MPs who never uttered a word during plenary sessions last year. They include Irene Kasalu (Kitui) and Rose Museo (Makueni).

During the period under review, the Covid-19 pandemic struck making house sessions to have less number of MPs than normal capacity.

Some of the MPs who never spoke in the house were very vocal in public barazas yet it is their legislative responsibility to contribute in the house in order to hold government accountable, represent the electorate views and make debates vibrant.

Official contributions of MPs in parliament are recorded in Hansard. MPs also spend their time in committees where they effectively handle tasks assigned to them by the Speaker.

With the requirement by the IEBC that all legislators must have a degree when vying for their elective positions, it remains to be seen if part of the reason some never speak in parliament is due to language barrier. They are supposed to speak in Swahili and English while contributing in the plenary sessions.
