The Kenya Association of Urological Surgeons (KAUS) conducted a three day medical camp in Kitui County targeting residents with kidney and urinary tract infections.

The noble voluntary service treated 203 patients, saving them Sh400Million.
The doctors carried out the operations in four hospitals in the expansive county. They are Kitui County Referral Hospital, Mwingi Level Four Hospital, Mutomo Mission Hospital and Jordan Hospital.
In an interview with K24, Dr James Ipol who is the national secretary for KAUS and Kenyatta National Hospital urological surgeon said the health specialists decided to go to the counties because there are many people who are suffering and lack the financial ability to travel to Nairobi where many such hospitals offering urological services are based. “Specialist volunteers offer probono services to patients with urological complications to reduce cost”, he told K24’s Brenda Mwende.
Medical camp
The annual medical camp has previously been done in three other counties. They are Malindi, Kisumu and Meru. The urologists were in Meru last year offering the voluntary treatment to patients. They were in Kisumu the previous year and Malindi in 2018.
Dr Ipol said that the patients they target in their voluntary medical camp are the poor and the suffering.
By the second day, the health specialists had treated and discharged 183 patients. In the third and final day, they treated 60 more residents.
All these patients were served without paying any shilling.
Jordan Hospital CEO Dr Joshua Matu said they have been able to reduce the burden of the disease. The hospital has a catheter foundation which serves those going for short calls with the help of tubes.
