Mwingi central MP Dr. Gideon Mulyungi has urged the national government to reinstate School feeding program and supply Kitui residents with relief food, following poor rains this season which have resulted into acute crop failure and hunger.

Mwingi central MP issuing planting seeds to a farmer last season: Eventually
the rains failed causing acute crop failure.
Speaking during a fund raising towards purchase of a school bus at Masavi Girls at Nguni in his constituency where more than Ksh. 6.6 million shillings were raised, the legislator said that drought situation in Kitui county was worsening on daily basis and urged the relevant ministries in the National and county government to intervene before any casualties are reported.

Dr. Mulyungi said that it was sad that it had been severally been reported by senior government officials from both the national and the county government that Kitui was food secure to the detriment of residents, whereas the situation the ground is wanting.

He said that most pupils especially those in primary schools risked dropping out of school, if food is not availed in their schools as back in their homes there is nothing to eat.

The legislator also warned school principals who are still withholding certificates from students who have already sat for their KCSE, terming it a criminal case which to be punishable by law.

He urged the national government through the ministry of education to compel such principals who have denied form four leavers their certificates to release them immediately, as withholding certificates from such students is denying them an opportunity to further their studies as well as seek some job opportunities.
